Lovely vintage print of “Ana Rupene and Child” by Gottfried Lindauer. Gottfried did his original painting based off a cabinet-card photograph taken in the late 1870’s of a Māori woman and child.
The photograph depicts a Māori mother dressed in a traditional Korowai cloak, with a Moko Kauae (facial tattoo) that depicts her whakapapa (lineage) and mana (status in the tribe). (more on the origins of the piece can be found here: https://www.nzgeo.com/photography/picture-story/)
